USD to CAD currency conversion FAQs

Exchange rates quoted in the media are interbank exchange rates, which are used by banks and other interbank participants to buy and sell currencies in the wholesale market. The interbank rate quoted in the media is typically for a minimum amount of US$5,000,000.

Usually, when a client completes a transaction it is for an amount smaller than $5,000,000 and as a result, a retail rate is applied. This rate includes a spread added to the interbank rate to account for market movement between when the client transaction is completed and when smaller client amounts can be accumulated and traded on the interbank market.

There are a few easy ways to get cash while you’re in the U.S.

1) Get cash at ATMs

Use your debit card at one of our 50,000+ no-fee2 Allpoint and PNC ATMs to access funds from your account. You can use your debit card at any Visa, NYCE, or PLUS ATM.

Find a no-fee ATM near you.

2) Get cash back with debit card purchases at larger retailers

When you’re making a debit card purchases at a larger retail merchant (such as a grocery store or big box store), you can ask for cash back. Since your Visa Debit card works wherever Visa is accepted, getting cash this way is very convenient. There’s no need to find an ATM.

To receive cash back at the store, use your debit card and PIN to select "cash back" at the card terminal before you finish your debit card purchase. It's that easy! Some merchants limit the amount of cash you can get at one time, so be sure to ask beforehand.

3) Get cash at a U.S. financial institution

With a U.S. Visa Debit card, you can go to most U.S. financial institutions and show your photo ID and your U.S. Visa Debit card to ask for a cash advance. You’ll be able to withdraw up to $5,000, but the amount varies based on the financial institution. The money will be immediately withdrawn from your bank account, unlike a credit card cash advance.
