Why Do I Need a U.S. Credit Card and a U.S. Debit Card?

When traveling or staying longer-term in the U.S., you’ll need to make purchases along the way. Buying gas, groceries and other necessity items is easy and seamless when you have a U.S. credit card or a U.S. debit card. No one wants the hassle or added expense of exchange rates and fees when exchanging Canadian dollars for U.S. dollars. And your Canadian card will mostly likely not be accepted throughout the U.S. Having U.S. cards – whether they are credit or debit – allows you to make purchases in the States whenever and wherever you need to make them.

But why is it advantageous to have both a credit and a debit card? A debit card pulls funds directly from your U.S. checking account, and is a convenient way to access cash. While these cards can also be used to make purchases, many clients prefer to use their credit card for purchases for a few reasons: many credit cards offer insurance protections and other benefits such as auto rental insurance, travel accident insurance, warranty manager, roadside assistance and travel emergency assistance to name a few. Most credit cards offer a rewards program that allow you to earn points on your purchased to redeem for travel, gift cards, merchandise or cash back. These are valued benefits when traveling or staying abroad!

Additionally, a U.S. credit card will help to establish a credit history in the U.S. Thus, if your stay is extended and/or if you are relocating to the States longer-term, you’ll be enabled to build a credit history to support the borrowing of funds when needed.

If you decide a U.S. credit card is right for you, RBC Bank can utilize your Canadian credit history to approve you for an RBC Bank Visa credit card. RBC Bank can also set you up with a Checking Account which comes with a U.S. debit card, giving you that seamless, easy access to your money whenever you need it!

RBC Bank offers two credit card options:  the Platinum Credit Card and the Signature Black Credit Card . Both cards earn rewards points that can be used for a whole host of benefits – cash them in for travel, merchandise, US and Canadian gift cards at some of your favorite merchants, or simply use the points to redeem for cash back that will be applied toward your card’s balance. These points are an easy-to-use, simple way to make using your credit card work for you!
